For Tuesday

Filed under: Uncategorized — jbcox @ 6:14 pm

I know today was a bit crazy, but sometimes that’s just how it is with technology! I’m going to try to have someone from IT come in Tuesday to fix some of our “tech” issues.

We’ll also spend some more time on your banners in class Tuesday. I know a lot of you still had questions, and I didn’t have time to get around to everyone.

For Tuesday, be prepared to come in and work on your banner. We’ll also make sure they get uploaded to your website. Don’t worry about coming in with your banner finished.

Stock & free photos for your banner

Filed under: Uncategorized — jbcox @ 5:23 pm

If you want to include a photo in your banner, but you’re not sure about taking your own, there is an alternative: websites like this allow you to download free stock photos for your website, as long as you are not using them to turn a profit. You are welcome to use these for your banner, though you should not use them elsewhere on your site.

Website requirements

Here are the pages that should be included on your professional website:

  • Index page (homepage) with photo & brief introduction
  • About me page (brief bio & photo)
  • Work experience page
  • Interests page

Any other information you want to include, including links to your professional work or resumes, should be included in your navigation tabs.

Please come prepared Thursday with your site map and banner information so we can dive in and make up for lost time today!

Mapping out your site

Filed under: Uncategorized — jbcox @ 11:30 am

Today we will talk about mapping out your website and getting started with some basic designs.

Some examples of pages with nice banners:

Princess Anne Chamber of Commerce

Layton’s Chance (check out its footer, too)

Delmarva Shorebirds

AEJMC & Slate (very simple, but clean examples)

Here is a good how-to guide if you want to try building your banner in Photoshop. It is also helpful if you are trying to do something a bit more complicated with your pictures.

Here is an example of how to build a banner in Word.

To take a screen shot on a Mac computer, simply press command+shift+3. Here is a guide to taking a screen shot on a PC.
